NEW YEAR’S DAY (January 1st)

Many Spanish people celebrate the passing of the old year by eating 12 grapes, one for each month of the year, during each ring of the twelve bell tolls as the New Year approaches. This is considered to bring good luck, but only if all twelve grapes are eaten in time. Not as easy as it sounds, as many grapes are bought in a small glass flute, with the very last one squashed and difficult to dislodge at the bottom.

DAY OF THE THREE KINGS (January 6th)

Christmas for children in Spain falls on the 6th of January, twelve days after Christmas Day, with the coming of the Three Kings. Children place their socks outside for the Kings to deliver them presents, but only if they have been good. Naughty children have the fear of finding black coal in their socks instead of presents. On the eve of January 6th, it is tradition for three men to dress as the Kings and ride around the town in a colourful procession, scattering sweets to all the children who eagerly follow.

SEMANA SANTA HOLY WEEK (March – April)

Semana Santa is a very religious time for many people in Spain and in all the cities both large and small, processions of hooded penitents carrying religious icons of Jesus and Mary held high, are paraded solemnly throughout the streets. It is a truly emotional and colourful experience for the participants and the many thousands of people who come to watch the procession well into the night.


Processions begin on Palm Sunday and will last until Easter Sunday. Processions in the main towns of all regions of Spain are huge and excel in grandeur. Because this is a deeply religious experience for many Spanish people, fireworks and excessive drinking is frowned upon.

LABOUR DAY (March 1st)

Dia del Trabajo is celebrated as a national holiday throughout Spain.

MONTH OF FERIAS (April)

SAN JUAN (June 24th)

Traditional costumes are normally worn with sweets and local drinks handed out to the many locals and tourists who follow the procession and join in the merriment. This is a great party atmosphere that lasts 2-3 days. CORPUS CHRISTI (June)

Some of the best school in Spain are actually in the Marbella region. But these are private schools and fee costs can be very high indeed. Parents can expect to pay out between 200 euros and 5000 euros each month to have their children study in these schools. Not suprisingly therefore, most of the pupils in these schools are the children of wealthy foreign residents who live along the coast.

The obvious answer then is to build more schools to acommodate the growing numbers. But the problem is suitable land upon which to build these new schools. The money must be provided by the Town Hall and approved by the Junta de Andalucia. I remember the first time I visited the Costa del Sol – it was on a college trip some 16 years ago. We stayed in Torremolinos and I have to say I wasn’t impressed, but after a work’s educational in May of this year I have totally changed my mind. The Andalucian tourist board that laid on our trip have spent a lot of time, effort and money updating this lovely stretch of Spanish coastline and I was most impressed with the level of cleanliness.

Our first port of call was Malaga itself, which is home to the main airport here – again on a typical beach style ‘bucket and spade’ holiday, you would never really know that this beautiful city exists! We stayed here for 2 nights visiting the bullring, cathedral and its many stylish cafes and shops – so if it’s a city break you are looking for; try a holiday to Malaga, as it’s one of Spain’s more undiscovered cities but well worth a visit.


The next resort along is Torremolinos, which again is one of the older resorts here – a firm favourite with all nationalities and home to many hotels and apartments. The fine sandy beach here stretches right along the coast from one resort to the next and is ideal for families – even the promenades have been well maintained and renewed to make it more modern and appealing to the eye. This resort houses many shops, bars and restaurants and is an ideal choice for all age groups.


Another ten minutes up the coast brings you to one of the nicest resorts along here, which is Benalmadena – slightly more upmarket than the other resorts, this is home to a modern marina surrounded by plush apartments and upmarket restaurants. There are many hotels and apartment complexes, an array of shops, bars, restaurants and some popular nightspots, which all contribute to making Benalmadena a firm favourite among holidaymakers, not to mention the cable car, which operates every day, taking you across the motorway and up to the bird sanctuary in the Spanish mountains – A must while you’re her. Furthermore, Tivoli World is a theme park ideal for the kids! Benalmadena Pueblo makes for a quieter break – this is a typical Spanish-style village next to Benalmadena, but a lot more peaceful.


For the last 2 nights of our trip we were taken to Fuengirola. Just ten minutes on from Benalmadena, Fuengirola may well be the most popular resort in Costa del Sol, home to many hotels that line the promenade, stretching up to the marina. Fuengirola is a firm favourite with the elderly clientele, mainly during the winter months, and in the summer popular with all ages, with plenty to do. Fuengirola Zoo is well worth a visit – I really enjoyed myself there! We actually went into the Lima enclosure with them and watched them sunbathe! A great day out, for all the family.


One place I had never been to, but heard a lot about along the Costa del Sol, was Mijas. All I can say is “Wow! What a beautiful place”. I would recommend anyone visiting the area to take a trip up there before you leave. An Andalucian village nestled high in the mountains with its whitewashed houses, cobbled streets, small cafes and boutiques. In the main square, horse and cart rides await the tourists – there are many little spots to take breathtaking pictures of the scenery. We also visited a nearby golf complex called La Cala resort, home to apartments, a hotel and beautiful golf courses – they even do golf training here – and many football teams come here for their training weeks. They also have a spa – ideal for the ladies!


Marbella and Puerto Banus are also very popular with tourists – probably the most upmarket and expensive area to visit, with the marina at Puerto Banus housing million-pound yachts belonging to many a famous person. With a wide array of stylish nightspots, bars and restaurants and plenty of designer shops and boutiques to keep you amused during the day!


The Costa del Sol stretches for miles and I haven’t covered all resorts, but as you can see from the ones that I have visited, there really is something here to suit everyone – for a city break, try Malaga or Granada. It really is a golfer’s paradise here, with many courses available from 9 holes through to 60! If you fancy a spa break, there are many nice hotels offering great spa packages.


For a quiet week on the beach or for a fun-packed family holiday, you really can’t go wrong with Spain holidays. I will definitely be going back very soon!

The Guadalmedina is fed by the lakes created by the moors in the historic village of Guadalest. The old center of Malaga town can be found on the river’s left bank and the Guadalhorce River which flows west of the city and out into the Mediterranean.


The inner city of Malaga is present just behind the port. Today the city still gains as much income through fishing and agriculture as well as tourism. Malaga is still very much a functioning industrial town as well as an interesting tourist location.


By far the most imposing land mark in Malaga has to be the grandiose La Alcazaba. The thick fortified walls, towering remains and ostentatious powerful architecture make this fortress in Malaga a sight not to be missed. It can be reached by a quick saunter from the Plaza de Anduana, The Fortress dates back to the early 700s but the majority of the vast structure was built in the mid eleventh century. The door way which will take you inside the fort is know as Christ’s door it marks the place where the Christians of Malaga held their first Mass after the defeat of the Moors.


The winding path will take you through stunning landscaped gardens, you be amazed at this haven of tranquility right in the middle of bustling Malaga city center. Fountains and terraces follow the path closely until you reach the inner courtyards of the fort. One of the first buildings you will come across is a small palace which now houses the Archeological museum. This building grants you fantastic views of the city; all the way from the industrial port to the dominating mountains in the distance. Whilst you’ll easily be distracted by the beauty and sheer presence of this building make sure you don’t miss the ruins of a Roman amphitheatre. Located just below the entrance of La Alcazaba it is an excellently preserved example of Roman building and a glimpse back through time at the way this unique area of Spain once looked. From here the more adventurous can follow the steep path to the very top of Gibralfaro Hill and explore the majestic castle.


In true Spanish style once the Moors had been defeated Christian Spaniards set about construction of an impressive stirring Cathedral. Set in a square know as the Plaza de la Cathedral it is located on the site of a previous mosque. Built in bright local limestone construction began in 1528 by Pedro Lopez and Diego Siloe. As many Cathedrals in Spain this particular one shares an inter mingled amalgamation of building styles, in fact it’s still not completely finished try to spot the la manquita or unfinished tower. The cathedral is a perfect stop for a momentary escape from the vicious mid day heat and noise of Malaga.


Arguably the most famous former resident of Malaga has to be Pablo Picasso, there is a fantastic museum sited n the Palacio de Buenavista, here you will find one of the worlds greatest tribute to the artists and finest collections of his work in one place. Foe the real art aficionados you can even visit the house in which Picasso was born.


Malaga has an indoor market which is an absolute must see stop for anyone visiting the city. Perfect for a lunch time visit the streets outside are filled with busy cafes offering honest genuine Spanish fare. The Malaga region produces some excellent wines so be sure to sample these over a leisurely lunch. The market is located west of the cathedral and can supply you with any thing you can imagine from tones of fresh fish to flowers or cloth. Malaga is the perfect destination for a holiday break or a day trip adventure.

You have probably heard of many port cities around the world, you may have heard of Malaga, it is a port city and can be found in Andalusia, in the South of Spain. The history of Malaga is quite interesting. The Phoenicians who are suspected to be from the Tyre region are said to have founded the city of Malaga. The name of the city Malaga is derived from the word Malaka which means salt in Phoenicians. This name was chosen because of all the salt water fish that can be found in the harbor. This is most probably the reason why they would have settled down in this area because of the abundant fish and other resources that were available in the area. In the 8th century this land was ruled over by the Muslims who were ruling over Spain at that point in time. This land became an important center of trade. The Costa del Sol is a splendid tourist spot.

Travelers who passed through this land left many historical records about Malaga being one of the most beautiful areas in the region. There is a lot of poetry that describes the beauty of the land and also many historical accounts claiming that the land has an abundant source of fruits and other food stuff that were used for trade with the other lands in the area. The pomegranates were said to have no equal in the world. This was also one of the cities where the Arabs ruled over for many year and it was because of the fertile lands of the area that the Arabs were reluctant to let go of the land. The Christians struggled for many years to get the Arabs out of the land and finally in the years of 1487 they took control of the area. This was five years before Granada fell. In the year of 1704 the largest naval battle which was a part of the War of Spanish succession took place in the south sea of Malaga.

From the year of 1960 onwards, the economy of Malaga was boosted heavily because of the influx of tourists in the city. This helped the country to strengthen its economical backbone and has helped to tremendously develop the country.

NEW YEAR’S DAY (January 1st)

New Year’s Day is a public holiday celebrated throughout Spain to welcome in the beginning of a New Year. Each Spanish town and city throughout the country will have some festival arranged in the main square, typically the Plaza Mayor, often accompanied with music and fireworks. Many Spanish people celebrate the passing of the old year by eating 12 grapes, one for each month of the year, during each ring of the twelve bell tolls as the New Year approaches. This is considered to bring good luck, but only if all twelve grapes are eaten in time. Not as easy as it sounds, as many grapes are bought in a small glass flute, with the very last one squashed and difficult to dislodge at the bottom.

DAY OF THE THREE KINGS (January 6th)

Christmas for children in Spain falls on the 6th of January, twelve days after Christmas Day, with the coming of the Three Kings. Children place their socks outside for the Kings to deliver them presents, but only if they have been good. Naughty children have the fear of finding black coal in their socks instead of presents. On the eve of January 6th, it is tradition for three men to dress as the Kings and ride around the town in a colourful procession, scattering sweets to all the children who eagerly follow.

SEMANA SANTA HOLY WEEK (March – April)

Semana Santa is a very religious time for many people in Spain and in all the cities both large and small, processions of hooded penitents carrying religious icons of Jesus and Mary held high, are paraded solemnly throughout the streets. It is a truly emotional and colourful experience for the participants and the many thousands of people who come to watch the procession well into the night.


Processions begin on Palm Sunday and will last until Easter Sunday. Processions in the main towns of all regions of Spain are huge and excel in grandeur. Because this is a deeply religious experience for many Spanish people, fireworks and excessive drinking is frowned upon.

LABOUR DAY (March 1st)

Dia del Trabajo is celebrated as a national holiday throughout Spain.

MONTH OF FERIAS (April)

April is the month of exuberant ferias in Andalucia, with Seville holding what is considered to be the biggest and best in Spain. The festivals last up to two weeks with colourful processions held in traditional costume, bullfights, firework displays, flamenco shows and partying well into the early hours.

SAN JUAN (June 24th)

San Juan is celebrated throughout Spain and particularly in the costal regions with bonfires on the beaches that last all night on the 23rd. It is tradition to rush into the sea at midnight to wash away your sins, symbolising the baptism of Saint John the Baptist.
