In the south of Spain, looking towards Gibraltar, is the Costa del Sol – the Coast of the Sun. With about 300 days of sunshine every year, this area more than lives up to its name.

Add miles of beautiful beaches, good access by air and loads of amenities, it is not surprising that the tourist industry has grown considerably here. Modern development has seen the coastal areas grow to provide accommodation and entertainment for the millions who visit each year staying in Costa del Sol hotels or Costa del Sol apartments.

For families with children of all ages, the coast offers the prime requirements for a summer holiday – sand and sea. All the beaches along this stretch of coast are splendid, whatever their size. The sand is golden, clean and soft. The sea is always warm and safe.

The Mediterranean has shallow “tides” and few waves, particularly in the summer months. The beaches shelve very gently into the water. Almost all beaches in this area have blue flag status, so even young children can play around in the water, quite safely.

For older children, or their parents, there are a wide variety of water-based activities in every resort. Surfing, sailing, kite surfing are all catered for. It is said that there are more jet-skis per person than anywhere else in Europe; so enough for everyone.
As an alternative, the resorts provide activity and interest centres for all ages. Funny Beach in Malaga, for example has rides, karting, trampolines and activities at all levels, even for the very young.

In Marbella, “Arcadia” is a specially built children’s park, providing playgrounds, sports facilities and all amenities. There are separate areas for under 3’s (junior) and 3 – 12 year olds (senior), geared to each age group’s abilities.

For something different, the Aquarium at Puerto Banus offers fish with a difference. There is a wide range of fish and sea creatures to see in the large displays. For the youngsters who enjoy swimming, there is also the chance to swim with the creatures in their own pool. Fully supervised, children can dive and play with the rays, which are quite tame and enjoy the attention. They will get a certificate to show everyone back home what they did!

All along the Costa del Sol there are water parks, amusement parks, even a zoo, aimed at amusing and entertaining all ages. For lovers of nature and wildlife, much of the area around the main towns has been preserved as a series of natural parks, to enjoy at one’s leisure.

For all the modern development, the towns of the Costa del Sol have not forgotten their own culture. There are a wide range of local events throughout the area and the year. Up to 3,000 fiestas take place, celebrating religious festivals, carnivals, harvest or just the joy of living. All the family will be engrossed and delighted watching or even joining in.
