The Spanish City of Malaga in the Costa del Sol region is enriched in history. Malaga has seen many changes from the various civilisations that have past through the city and left their trace. The name Malaga originates from the term Malaka which means ‘fish salting place’ and was founded by the Phoenicians in 800BC. After being under Greek ownership for 70 years the area fell into the hands of the Carthaginians before being taken over by the Romans following the Punic Wars. In 743 Malaga was invaded by Arabs and the city began to flourish and was surrounded by a large wall with five gates. In 1487 the city was conquered by the Spanish and has remained under their ownership ever since. Since then Malaga has grown steadily and is now one of the most affluent Spanish cities thanks to it’s popular tourist attractions. In the 17th Century the harbour was constructed and has since been extended, and has become a major focal point of the area. Throughout the 19th century work began on improving the cities infrastructure with large hotels and villas being built and new streets opened. During the 1960’s the area began to see its biggest economic boom as tourists from across Europe flocked to the region to take advantage of the hot weather, clear seas and lower property prices. This boom gave Malaga a springboard and it has continued to grow ever since. Malaga airport is now one of the busiest in Europe and with the arrival of cheap flights many tourists now take several annual visits, many have even purchased their own property which they rent out when they are not occupying it. Despite Malaga’s urbanisation much of the City’s history is still evident; the original Roman Theatre is still standing, as is the Moorish Court with its cooling foundations at the Castle. Malaga is located in the Costa del Sol region of Spain which has also seen a lot of development since tourists began regularly visiting the region in the 1960’s. As the Costa del Sol’s main airport is located in Malaga the city has been fortunate to cash in on the success of neighbouring towns and cities. So if you are looking for a luxuries holiday destination with great history and culture then Malaga is certainly a place worth visiting.
