Malaga is famed as one of Europe’s top locations for the more discerning tourist. With much to offer the golfer, yachtsman or shopper, Malaga is renowned as a high class sunshine spot. Although the attractions of Malaga are ample and virtuous, there is little in the Spanish resort to occupy the more inquisitive mind.

The city of Malaga offers plenty to while away the hours over the course of a weekend or short break. But venturing further into Southern Andalucia can be a rewarding experience for the free spirited traveller. Andalucia is a heady mix of Spanish and Moorish architecture – the moors having occupied the region until the mid-fifteenth century. The illustrious past of the region is exemplified just a short drive from Malaga where La Alcazba, an archaeological museum housed in a Moorish fortress provides a fascinating commentary on the hidden depths of Malaga and the surrounding area ( http://www.andalucia.com ).

Indeed Southern Andalucia offers one of the most interesting and varied self drive routes in Spain. Leaving Malaga and heading West along provides a rewarding insight into the many faces of Spain. Driving along the coast, the landscape varies as the tourist savvy Costa del Sol gives way to the more unspoilt Costa de la Luz.

Heading East into Granada and the magnificent city that gives the region its’ name is a must on a self drive tour of southern Spain. Although relatively unspoilt by tourist activity Granada is dominated by the impressive Alhambra, and offers meandering, narrow streets – a further legacy of the regions Moorish influence.

For a more cosmopolitan experience, the capital city of Andalucia, Seville, lies to the north. Although the drive from Malaga is not particularly rewarding, Spain’s fourth largest city offers the grandeur expected of a major European city. The city is characterised again by Moorish architecture, but is dominated by one of the largest cathedrals in Europe and the impressive Mudejar Palace of Alcazar.

Car hire is readily available and relatively affordable in Malaga ( http://www.easycar.com/aspx/car-hire/location/Malaga.aspx/EN ). Driving in Southern Spain has no real pitfalls, although the mountainous roads of Granada and the twisting coastal roads of the Costa de la Luz must be taken with some additional care.

After the excitement of the Andalucian adventure, it can be nice to relax and unwind back in Malaga, taking in a round of golf, a stroll around the harbour or visiting one of the many attractions afforded to the city’s most famous son, Pablo Picasso.

Latest news on Malaga Airport · Costa Del Sol Malaga EU

Mucho More About Here: http://costadelsolmalaga.eu/

The new terminal building at Malaga Airport is due to open next Easter and is set to become a first class commercial centre with more than ten million travellers a year passing through – and this could quickly double.

The Spanish Airport Authority Aena have recently issued contracts for the 21 new food and drinks outlets and 24 shops – most of which will be in the new terminal building. The new Malaga Airport terminal will offer six thousand square metres of bars, cafeterias and restaurants and 2,800 square metres of shops.

Bars and restaurants will include: Soho Coffee, Caviar House, Caffe Ritazza, Pizza Hut, Burger King, O’Leary’s, Starbucks, La Moraga Airport, Whopper Bar, VIPs, Upper Crust, Gambrinus, Dehesa Santa María, Café y Té, La Lechera and Guinness.

Caviar House and Prunier are aimed at high end dining and gourmet travellers, while at the other end of the scale the Whopper Bar is a new concept recently launched by Burger King with only two branches currently open in Florida and Munich. La Moraga Airport is a dining project being led by the local gourmet chef Dani García who is famous for using liquid nitrogen to create a crispy skin around a piece of Iberian ham. He is aiming to recreate his incredibly popular city centre tapas bar in an airport environment.

And the latest news on the shopping area is that it will feature retail outlets for Adidas, Adolfo Domínguez, Ferrari, National Geographic, Cottet watches and spectacles and a Librería Luces bookshop. The National Geographic store will be the first one ever to be located in an airport.

The new terminal has a surface area of 385,000 sqm and has cost an estimated €320M. It will be able to handle 9,000 passengers and 7,500 pieces of luggage per hour. It will have 179 check in desks: 48 departure gates (22 remote and 26 with travelator walkways).

Two new road links will be added: via the A-7 motorway to the south, and the future ring road to the north which will be joined to the national MA-21 road.
Two car parks will be opened with space for more than 3,500 vehicles.

The second runway is expected to be ready for the end of 2010 and will almost double fight capacity from 37 to 72 operations per hour. There will also be a train terminus in the airport building where you can initially catch trains to Malaga City Centre and Fuengirola, with future plans including trains along the Costa del Sol as far as Estepona and an inland high- speed AVE connection to Seville.

As the work is nearing completion and it is believed trial testing will take place early next year, with 2,500 “volunteer passengers” scheduled to check it out and 4,000 suitcases being used to keep the simulations as close to reality as possible.

Expansion of Malaga airport · Costa Del Sol Malaga EU

Mucho More About Here: http://costadelsolmalaga.eu/

For the many of you that have been to the Costa del Sol recently or are planning to come soon, the constant work being done at the Malaga airport has probably not gone unnoticed. The work as been ongoing now for a few years and looks like completion is coming soon, Easter 2010 according to the powers that be. Not bad timing considering a lot of people talking of many western European economies should be out of recession by then.

Let me just be clear, the new terminal will be open next Easter, construction should be finished at the end of this year, and during January and February of next year a trial will be carried out so that on opening day everything will work ‘perfectly’. This will be followed by the new terminal which should be ready a several months after the Easter opening.

This expansion will almost triple its capacity and will bring its competitiveness into line with other European airports, with enough capacity for the next fifty years and will solidify its position as a major airport in Spain and Europe. The expansion should also allow for access by the new ‘super’ planes developed for those long haul flights making it a connection centre.

The new terminal will be joined to the current ones, generating a total area of 385,000m² (more than double the current 135,000m²) with the capacity to attend to 9,000 passengers per hour, that’s around 30 million travellers a year (again doubling current capacity)with 179 check-in desks and 48 boarding gates, with 7,500 pieces of luggage processed every hour.

The new runway, on completion, will allow the capacity of flights per hour to almost double, from 37 to 72.

Of course, they are not improving only the airport itself, but the surrounding infrastructure with a modern transport interchange with access to buses, taxis, private and rental vehicles and the new railway station for the Malaga-Fuengirola. Additionally two new road links will be added: the south, by way of the A-7 motorway, and the north, by way of the future ring road, which will be joined to the national MA-21 road. Furthermore, two car parks will be opened with space for 3,700 vehicles.

This vast project will not only keep Malaga competitive as a transportation and commercial area, it will also benefit tourism and property prices throughout the Costa del Sol. The Junta de Andalucía has in recent years become quite dependent on British tourists which have made up a sizable percentage of the foreign tourists flying to the Costa del Sol. They seem to have realised this and have over the last year been trying to promote the destination around the world. The new airport should allow for direct flights from most parts of the world, making it easier for Chinese, Russian, etc… tourists to visit.

Furthermore by allowing more direct flights from further a field, the average time its takes people to get to the Costa del Sol should decrease, which will allow more people to benefit (as many British, Irish, etc.. have) of shorter travelling times, thus making a second/holiday home in the sun a more convenient possibility.

Regards
Andrew Belles

Malaga Airport Car Hire: An Idiot’s Guide to Car Hire at Malaga Airport · Costa Del Sol Malaga EU

Mucho More About Here: http://costadelsolmalaga.eu/

If you are one of the many millions of Brits expected to fly out on holiday to the Costa del Sol this year, there is a good chance you’ll be jetting into Malaga Airport. As Spain’s 4th busiest airport, Malaga Pablo Picasso Airport sees approximately 13 million passengers through its gates each year, which results in the 2 terminals (soon to be 3) getting a little chaotic especially around peak season. With this in mind, it pays dividends to know in advance exactly where everything is. So once the luggage has been collected, the main priority for most people is getting out of the airport and to accommodation as quickly as possible so the fun can start. This more often means finding the right car hire at Malaga Airport.

Whether due to impatient kids, size-able baggage or the unfamiliar temperatures, trying to grapple with confusing airport signage and wade through golfers, foreign students, hen parties, as well as regular holiday-makers, can prove a trying way to start a holiday, unless forearmed with the right knowledge. Our Idiot’s Guide can ensure you move like a heat seeking missile through the swathes of people, reach your target desk and be out of there before you’ve even had a chance to break a sweat.

There are currently 23 Malaga Airport car hire firms in total but only 10 of these are based directly inside the Terminal 2 building itself. These are Auriga Crown, Autos Lido, Avis, Europcar, Goldcar, Hertz, National Atesa, Record, Sixt and Solmar. Access to these offices is just through the doors after baggage reclaim but before going through the final doors to the Malaga Airport Arrivals hall. On the right hand side is a ramp that takes you downstairs to where all the offices are.

When you collect your keys, the staff member behind the desk will inform you which level of the car park your vehicle is situated on and the number of the bay. This will either be on your key fob or will be written down for you. From there you go to the opposite end of the hall to the entrance ramp, which takes you through to Level -1 of the car park. At the moment, the cars are spaced out over three levels: Ground Floor, Level -1 and Level -2. Most pick-up cars are parked between two floors with Auriga Crown, Europcar, National Atesa, Record, Solmar and Sixt on the Ground Floor and Autos Lido, Avis, Goldcar, Hertz, and both National Atesa and Record represented again on Level -1.

To return a vehicle, there is a special entrance for rental cars which is just past the regular P1 and P2 parking entrance bays. There is no ticket to collect when entering and passengers do not have to return the keys to the original terminal-based office as there is a corresponding office for each company on one of the three floors. Sixt is the only one that has 2 offices and these are on the ground floor and Level -2. Autos Lido, Avis, Goldcar, Hertz and Record all have their offices on Level -1, while Auriga Crown, Europcar, National Atesa, Sixt and Solmar´s are situated on Level -2. These offices are also for use by people renting a car but not flying from the airport. The much smaller Terminal 1 also has 5 car hire check-in desks which are on the left as you coming through into arrivals. They are Auriga Crown, Autos Lido, Europcar, National and Sixt.

Most of the off-airport rental firms are located on a slip road running adjacent to the approach road into the airport called Avenida Garcia Morato. These Malaga car hire companies are Cargest, First Car Group, Global, Helle Hollis, Holiday, Malagacar, National, Niza and Top rent-a-car. Getting to these is incredibly simple as each puts on a specially-dedicated courtesy bus that either schedules runs to and from the airport every 15 minutes or uses the flight details of the customers to turn up at the right time. These buses collect from just outside the arrivals terminal by the regular bus stop which is around 50 metres down on the right after exiting the building.

When returning the vehicle, drivers are advised to go round the roundabout and come back on themselves to turn right into the slip road called Avenida Garcia Morato. The final four Malaga Airport car rental firms are located just over the roundabout, after the BP garage on the right hand side and are Autolink, Marbesol, Tony´s and Yellow Car. They are also reachable via a footbridge that runs over the road. To find the footbridge turn right out of the Malaga Airport departures hall and follow the signs for the train station, which will lead you a little further down before making you cross the road and go through the car park.
