The new terminal building at Malaga Airport is due to open next Easter and is set to become a first class commercial centre with more than ten million travellers a year passing through – and this could quickly double.

The Spanish Airport Authority Aena have recently issued contracts for the 21 new food and drinks outlets and 24 shops – most of which will be in the new terminal building. The new Malaga Airport terminal will offer six thousand square metres of bars, cafeterias and restaurants and 2,800 square metres of shops.

Bars and restaurants will include: Soho Coffee, Caviar House, Caffe Ritazza, Pizza Hut, Burger King, O’Leary’s, Starbucks, La Moraga Airport, Whopper Bar, VIPs, Upper Crust, Gambrinus, Dehesa Santa María, Café y Té, La Lechera and Guinness.

Caviar House and Prunier are aimed at high end dining and gourmet travellers, while at the other end of the scale the Whopper Bar is a new concept recently launched by Burger King with only two branches currently open in Florida and Munich. La Moraga Airport is a dining project being led by the local gourmet chef Dani García who is famous for using liquid nitrogen to create a crispy skin around a piece of Iberian ham. He is aiming to recreate his incredibly popular city centre tapas bar in an airport environment.

And the latest news on the shopping area is that it will feature retail outlets for Adidas, Adolfo Domínguez, Ferrari, National Geographic, Cottet watches and spectacles and a Librería Luces bookshop. The National Geographic store will be the first one ever to be located in an airport.

The new terminal has a surface area of 385,000 sqm and has cost an estimated €320M. It will be able to handle 9,000 passengers and 7,500 pieces of luggage per hour. It will have 179 check in desks: 48 departure gates (22 remote and 26 with travelator walkways).

Two new road links will be added: via the A-7 motorway to the south, and the future ring road to the north which will be joined to the national MA-21 road.
Two car parks will be opened with space for more than 3,500 vehicles.

The second runway is expected to be ready for the end of 2010 and will almost double fight capacity from 37 to 72 operations per hour. There will also be a train terminus in the airport building where you can initially catch trains to Malaga City Centre and Fuengirola, with future plans including trains along the Costa del Sol as far as Estepona and an inland high- speed AVE connection to Seville.

As the work is nearing completion and it is believed trial testing will take place early next year, with 2,500 “volunteer passengers” scheduled to check it out and 4,000 suitcases being used to keep the simulations as close to reality as possible.
